30 Days of Gratitude - Day 5

I'm grateful for our week in Berlin in October 2013!  We visited German friends we'd met in Palo Alto and really enjoyed our stay in the city.  Berlin was modern and clean, filled with autumn trees whose leaves were changing color, and we were pleasantly surprised by how safe and beautiful it was.

We took an evening cruise on the Spree river, spent a day building and playing at Legoland, and lost an afternoon in the excessive luxury and cafes of the KaDeWe department store.  We ate flammkuchen at a boisterous German restaurant, burritos at a hip little Mexican restaurant, and joined the tourists for a fun dinner at Hard Rock Cafe.  All four of us had a great time!

We love Berlin! :)

One of the highlights of our trip was the Segway tour Joshua and I took. We had a blast wheeling around and seeing key Berlin sites like the Brandenburg Gate, Checkpoint Charlie, and the Holocaust memorial, which was incredibly moving.

There was also the moment when I made a complete fool of myself on the Segway. :) We turned left, and as I finished the turn, we went over the tiniest hill and I lost my balance... falling into a horse-drawn carriage next to me, where the group was toasting with champagne and having a great moment. I grabbed the side of the carriage, startling everyone and humiliating myself as they all turned to stare at me, and I also twisted my ankle trying not to completely fall off the Segway.  Not my most graceful moment!

At the time I was embarrassed, shaken, and slightly hurt, but now I can look back and laugh about it. I must have looked ridiculous falling into that carriage!  :)

And even when adventures have hiccups and mishaps, they are still wonderful experiences. I'm very thankful that I have so many great memories from Berlin!
