30 Days of Gratitude - Day 6
I'm grateful for our first trip to Ireland together in July 2008! It was the trip that started our enduring love affair with the Emerald Isle. We've come back two more times and spent close to three months living in Ireland since then.
Our British Isles cruise stopped in Dublin, Cork, and Belfast in Ireland. We instantly fell in love with the breathtaking scenery - the gorgeous green hills and bright blue skies, and the immense wonder of Giant's Causeway. There is a peaceful serenity to the Irish countryside, which has lured us with its siren call for over 7 years now.
The English major in me was excited to visit James Joyce's favorite pub in Dublin, and of course we had a pint of Guinness there... which Joshua is convinced tastes better in Ireland.
We also kissed the Blarney Stone, which is a pretty terrifying experience: you lie on your back and an old man tells you to keep scooting farther back over a hole in the castle wall, until you finally reach the right point where you can tilt your head back and kiss a rock over your head. It's a lot to go through to get the gift of gab!
And our absolute favorite stop was Giant's Causeway in Northern Ireland. It's a crazy undulating staircase of octagonal rocks along the coastline, with the sea on one side and steep green hills on the other. It's a magnificent setting, simply beautiful, and we loved our time there.
The whole country of Ireland is wonderful to us. I'm thankful for our cruise there before the girls and the huge role that those precious memories have played in pushing us out the door and into the world as digital nomads.
