Elephant Poopoo Paper Park
It sounds like a joke, but we had a great time at the Elephant Poopoo Paper Park outside of Chiang Mai! It's a very fun place, dedicated to helping the environment and creating lovely handicrafts.
Touring the Park
We took a really interactive tour showing how they turn the fibers from elephant poo into beautiful handmade paper - we got to touch the dried poo (it doesn't smell!), stir the boiling poo, spread the dyed fibers on a screen, and peel a dried sheet of paper off a screen. Our girls really enjoyed it!
Make Your Own Poopoo Paper Crafts
The best part of our visit was the DIY station at the end of the tour, where we got to decorate poopoo paper crafts to bring home as souvenirs! They have bookmarks, passport holders, greeting cards, paper fans, mini-journals, and more than you can decorate with paper punch-outs of elephants, hearts, flowers, butterflies, letters, etc. Our girls have been asking to go back to the park, just so they can make more crafts!
Elephant Poopoo Paper Park - Know Before You Go
Elephant Poopoo Paper Park is in the Mae Rim area, about 25 minutes northwest of Chiang Mai. The tour costs 100 baht per person, ages 5 and up; younger children are free. You can also visit the park's gift shop and cafe [featuring poopoo chip cookies... which I confess we didn't try, so I still don't know if that's a joke :)] without purchasing a tour ticket.
