Rome is a city of amazing pizza, pasta, and gelato, but if you’re looking for a healthy break from all those delicious carbs, here are 4 great places where you can get fresh juices and smoothies:
Esco Sazio - This adorable little shop offers completely organic juices and smoothies, in addition to healthy sandwiches and salads. Swing on one of their wooden swings as you drink your juice and enjoy the chalkboard-meets-chandelier ambiance. Our girls loved the chocolate banana protein smoothie, and I enjoyed my tropical juice with pineapple and guava.
Via dei Banchi Vecchi, 135, 00186 Roma, Italy
Pronto - We stumbled across this restaurant in Rome's Monti neighborhood, near the Colosseum, and stopped in when we saw their “fresh juices” sign. Their fruit is freshly chopped, juiced, and blended (if you get juice with pears in it) right in front of you, and the three juices that we tried were all fantastic. You can take your juice outside and hang out at the fountain with the locals while you drink it and take in the area’s energetic vibe.
Via dei Serpenti, 163, Roma
Aromaticus - This restaurant is also in the trendy Monti area, and they serve fresh juices and clean, mostly raw and unprocessed foods (salads, hummus, beef tartare, etc.). The shop itself is cute and hip, decorated with vintage cookbooks and selling potted herbs and gardening supplies, and the food and juice are excellent. The pineapple-mint juice was one of the best juices I’ve ever had, so perfectly sweet and delicious, and Joshua loved his Greek salad with pita bread, hummus, cherry tomatoes, olives, and feta cheese.
Via Urbana, 134, 00184 Roma, Italy
AllBiOne - Self-described as “organic street food”, AllBiOne serves organic juices, cut-up fresh fruit, and 14 different kinds of organic meatballs… everything from beef and tomato or chicken and curry to vegetarian eggplant parmesan or ricotta and pecorino cheese balls. Everything we ate was tasty, but I highly recommend the cheese “meat”balls, and the juices we got were fresh and delicious.
The restaurant is a short walk from the Colosseum, and the owner is really friendly - he overheard us talking about wanting strawberries in a juice for the girls, and he offered to make a strawberry-apple-orange juice for them that wasn’t listed on the board; it turned out to be perfect for them!
Largo Corrado Ricci, 34, Roma, Italy
